This fall 20 DDC students participated in the Science Discovery Program’s Organic Chemistry course. The mix of high school sophomores and juniors met every Saturday at noon for 10 weeks. The course was taught by Anna Ghurbanyan, a Columbia Associate of Instruction. Students learned safe laboratory practices, and explored topics like: mixture extraction, ester synthesis and thermochromism. Pictured are students investigating polymer strands in a Columbia chemistry laboratory - a learning experience above and beyond available public high school curricula. The course ends next week on a delicious note as the final lab features how to make liquid nitrogen ice cream just in time for the winter freeze!
