The Science Discovery Program has begun its second year highlighted by an outreach partnership with Columbia Associate Professor Lars Dietrich to form a Microbiology Club. The workshop introduces students to concepts of microbial multicellularity: how microbes live in communities and how these communities can be beneficial or detrimental to human health. As part of the workshop DDC students have gone around the Morningside Campus collecting samples of local bacteria that are then sent to imaging labs. DDC students are working directly with researchers to isolate bacteria and learn about the patterns of morphology. Pictured are the young high school researchers and the club leaders.
